There are four main ways to study for ACCA SBL: large tuition providers (such as Kaplan and BPP), free online resources (such as OpenTuition), small group classes, and 1-to-1 tutors. Large providers suit students who want a full structured course. Free resources suit confident self-studiers. Small groups and 1-to-1 tutors suit students who need personal feedback on their answers, including resit students.
Your SBL tuition options at a glance
| Option | Best for | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Large tuition providers (for example Kaplan, BPP) | Students who want a complete, structured course and study materials | Full syllabus coverage, published study texts and revision kits, scheduled classes, mock exams | Larger classes and less individual feedback; marking may be limited or extra |
| Free online resources (for example OpenTuition) | Confident self-studiers on a budget | Free lectures, notes and a student forum | No personal feedback on your answers; you need strong self-discipline |
| Small group classes | Students who want feedback but also like learning with others | Live sessions, weekly feedback, lower cost per hour than 1-to-1 | Fixed schedule; fewer groups to choose from |
| 1-to-1 tutor | Resit students, busy professionals, and anyone who needs targeted help | Fully personalised, flexible times, detailed feedback on your own answers | Quality varies by tutor, so check qualifications and SBL experience |
How to choose an SBL tuition provider
- Check the format of help you need. SBL is a case study exam, so feedback on your written answers matters more than in knowledge-based papers.
- Check credentials. For tutors, look for ACCA membership (ACCA or FCCA) and specific SBL experience. For providers, ACCA publishes a directory of approved learning partners on accaglobal.com.
- Check how marking works. Ask how many answers will be marked and how detailed the feedback is.
- Check timing. Make sure the course or sessions fit your exam sitting (March, June, September or December) and your working hours.
- Combine options. Many students use a provider's study text or free resources for knowledge, plus a tutor or mock marking for feedback.
Do you need tuition at all for SBL?
Not always. Students with strong technique, who pass mocks comfortably, can self-study with free resources, past exams and a concise guide such as Becoming A Strategic Business Leader. Tuition pays off most when you are scoring in the 40s, running out of time, or unsure whether your answers would pass. The SBL pass rate has averaged 49.9% since 2018, so many capable students benefit from outside feedback.
My approach
I offer online 1-to-1 SBL tutoring, small group online classes and mock exam marking. I focus only on SBL, and sessions centre on feedback from your own answers. Resit students may also find failed SBL resit help useful.
About your tutor
I am Adam Niazi, a Fellow of the ACCA (FCCA) with an MSc in Professional Accountancy from UCL and an Executive MBA from the University of Exeter. I wrote Becoming A Strategic Business Leader, a 19-chapter guide to the SBL syllabus, after coaching students through the exam. I also use these models in senior business roles, so sessions connect the theory to how real organisations work.
FAQs
What are the main ACCA SBL tuition providers?
Large providers such as Kaplan and BPP, free resources such as OpenTuition, plus small group classes and independent 1-to-1 tutors.
Is OpenTuition enough to pass SBL?
It can be for confident self-studiers. The main gap is personal feedback on your written answers, which many students add through a tutor or mock marking.
Is a 1-to-1 SBL tutor worth it?
It is most worthwhile if you are resitting, scoring in the 40s in mocks, or short of time and need targeted help.
How do I check a provider is ACCA approved?
ACCA publishes a directory of approved learning partners on its website, accaglobal.com.
Can I combine a provider with a tutor?
Yes. A common approach is to use a provider's materials or free lectures for knowledge, and a tutor or mock marking for feedback on answers.
