How the professional skills marks work
20 of the 100 marks are for five professional skills: communication, commercial acumen, analysis, scepticism and evaluation (ACCA). Each task says which skill it is testing. In practice that means:
- Communication: use the format asked for (report, email, slides) and write clearly for the named reader.
- Commercial acumen: show you understand the business and make realistic, practical points.
- Analysis: use the numbers and facts in the case, not generic theory.
- Scepticism: question information, assumptions and motives where the case gives you reason to.
- Evaluation: weigh up options and reach a justified recommendation.

How to prepare for SBL
- Learn the models properly, early. You need to know which model fits which question without hesitation. See our SBL models and frameworks guide.
- Practise under timed conditions. Use the ACCA practice platform and past and specimen papers. Time pressure is where most marks are lost.
- Use the pre-seen well. Understand the organisation and its industry, but do not try to predict the questions. Our pre-seen guide shows how.
- Write in the required format. Professional skills marks reward the right format for the right reader.
- Read the examiner's reports. They show exactly where candidates lose marks.

ACCA SBL FAQs
How long is the ACCA SBL exam?
3 hours and 15 minutes. That time includes reading, planning and reflection, which you can use flexibly at any point in the exam.
How many marks do you need to pass SBL?
50 out of 100. The paper has 80 technical marks and 20 professional skills marks.
What is the SBL pass rate?
Recent sittings have been 50% to 53%. The June 2026 pass rate was 51%. See the full SBL pass rate history.
When is the SBL pre-seen released?
Two weeks before the exam, through your ACCA exam planner. Read our pre-seen guide for how to use it.
Should I take SBL or SBR first?
There is no required order. ACCA advises completing the Ethics and Professional Skills module before attempting SBL, and SBL draws on knowledge from across the qualification, so many students prefer to sit it once their other technical knowledge is fresh.
Is SBL hard?
About half of candidates pass each sitting. Most who fail know the theory but do not apply it to the scenario, manage time or earn the professional skills marks. Timed practice is the best fix.
