CMI Level 7 Strategic Management and Leadership Practice is a master's-level qualification for senior managers from the Chartered Management Institute. It comes as an Award (7 credits), Certificate (14), Diploma (37) or Extended Diploma (64), is assessed by written assignments, and a Certificate or above opens CMI's Fast Track to Chartered Manager.
Last checked: November 2026, against CMI's qualification library and the Level 7 syllabus (version 10, August 2026).
What is CMI Level 7 Strategic Management and Leadership?
CMI Level 7 Strategic Management and Leadership is a family of professional qualifications from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), aimed at senior managers, directors and people moving into strategic roles. Level 7 on the UK's Regulated Qualifications Framework is the same academic level as a master's degree, so the work is demanding: you write long, analytical assignments that apply strategy theory to a real organisation, usually your own.
The current version is officially called CMI Level 7 in Strategic Management and Leadership Practice. It became operational on 1 July 2019 and replaced an older set of qualifications with similar names (codes 7A1V2, 7C1V2, 7D1V2 and 7XD1V2). CMI is withdrawing those legacy versions: the final date for legacy learners to be certificated is 30 November 2026. If a provider is still advertising the old unit numbers (7001, 7002 and so on), ask which version you would be registered on.
CMI says the qualification is aimed at senior, regional and specialist managers, directors and chief executives, and is aligned to CMI's professional standards and the Senior Leader apprenticeship standard.
Award vs Certificate vs Diploma: what is the difference?
The same qualification comes in four sizes. They share the same units and level; what changes is how many units you complete.
| Award | Certificate | Diploma | Extended Diploma | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CMI code | 7A30 | 7C30 | 7D30 | 7XD30 |
| Ofqual number | 603/4833/1 | 603/4834/3 | 603/4837/9 | 603/7618/1 |
| Minimum credits | 7 | 14 | 37 | 64 |
| Total qualification time (hours) | 70 | 140 | 370 | 640 |
| Guided learning hours | 18 | 36 | 106 | 196 |
| Typical units | 1 | 2 | 4 to 5 | 7 or more |
| Best for | Trying one topic, or a short employer course | A focused upskill in two areas | A substantial senior management qualification | The broadest programme; often linked to the Senior Leader apprenticeship |
One credit equals ten hours of total learning time, which includes teaching, self-study and writing assignments. The guided learning hours are the hours with a tutor. So a Diploma means around 370 hours of work in total, of which roughly 106 are guided.
What units are in CMI Level 7?
CMI groups the units into Group A (the core Level 7 units, 701 to 716) and Group B (a smaller set of Level 6 units that can top up a Diploma or Extended Diploma). Here are the Group A units and their credit values from the current syllabus:
| Unit | Title | Credits |

| 705 | Leading Strategic Change | 8 |
| 706 | Finance for Strategic Leaders | 9 |
| 707 | Organisational Design and Development | 8 |

Group B options include Procurement, Purchasing and Contracting; Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability; Leading Quality Management; Principles and Practices of Policy Development; Coaching Skills for Leaders; and Principles and Practices of Ethical Decision Making.
How do the rules of combination work?
- Award: at least one Group A unit, 7 credits or more.
- Certificate: at least two Group A units, 14 credits or more.
- Diploma: at least 30 credits from Group A, plus at least 7 more from Group A or B, for a total of 37 or more.
- Extended Diploma: at least 42 credits from Group A, plus at least 22 more from Group A or B, for a total of 64 or more.
In practice, providers choose the units for you. A popular Diploma combination is Strategic Leadership (701), Developing Organisational Strategy (704), Leading Strategic Change (705) and Finance for Strategic Leaders (706), which totals 37 credits. Always check which units a provider offers before you enrol.
What will I study in the core units?
Most Diploma programmes are built around four core units. Here is what each one asks of you in plain terms.
- Strategic Leadership (701): how leaders set direction, shape culture and influence others, and how your own leadership style fits your organisation. Expect to compare leadership theories and reflect on your own practice.
- Developing Organisational Strategy (704): analysing an organisation's environment and capabilities, then building and justifying a strategy. This is where tools such as PESTEL, SWOT and the Ansoff matrix earn their keep.
- Leading Strategic Change (705): why change succeeds or fails, how to plan it and how to bring people with you, using models such as Lewin's and Kotter's.
- Finance for Strategic Leaders (706): reading financial statements, judging investment proposals and understanding how finance supports strategy. Non-finance managers often find this the most useful unit, and the most daunting.
Other units let you specialise, for example in risk (708), data and information (709), marketing (710) or a strategic management project (712), which is a good choice if you have a real initiative to lead at work.
How is CMI Level 7 assessed?
There are no exams set by CMI. Each unit is assessed by a written assignment, typically a report applying the unit's theory to an organisation you know. The syllabus gives guideline word counts of 3,000 to 3,500 words for some units and 4,000 to 4,500 words for larger ones such as Strategic Leadership, Leading Strategic Change and the Strategic Management Project, with 10% leeway either way. Results are Pass or Refer, with no CMI grades, although providers may add their own.
The assignments reward the same skill as any strategic role: choosing the right framework, applying it honestly to a real situation and making a justified recommendation. Learners must be at least 19, and CMI sets no formal entry requirements, leaving those to providers. Many ask for a degree or management experience. For example, Edinburgh College's Diploma lists a degree, a current middle or senior management role and an interview.
How much does CMI Level 7 cost?
CMI does not set course fees; approved centres and training providers do. Prices vary widely by provider, size of qualification and how much tutor support is included. Two published examples:
| Provider | Qualification | Published price | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| ICS Learn | Level 7 Diploma | £2,549 full price (offered at £1,912 when checked), plus a CMI registration fee | Online, self-paced, 8 to 12 months typical |
| Edinburgh College | Level 7 Diploma | £2,731 (2024 intake), funding options available | 12 online workshops plus four assignments |
Awards and Certificates usually cost less because they involve fewer units. When comparing quotes, check whether CMI registration and membership are included, how much tutor feedback you get on drafts, and how long you have to finish. You can search for approved providers through CMI's find a centre tool.
Does CMI Level 7 lead to Chartered Manager?
Yes, it can shorten the route. CMI's routes to Chartered Manager include a Fast Track for people who hold a CMI Level 7 Certificate, Diploma or Extended Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership, completed in the last five years, plus at least three years' management experience. The Fast Track fee is £162 plus VAT, compared with £750 plus VAT for the Full Assessment route, plus membership fees in both cases.
| Route | Who it suits | Fee (plus VAT and membership) |
|---|---|---|
| Fast Track (Level 7 qualification) | CMI Level 7 Certificate or above in the last five years, plus 3 years' management experience | £162 |
| Full Assessment | A degree-level management qualification plus 3 years' experience, or 5 years' management experience | £750 |
| Apprenticeship | Passed a listed apprenticeship, such as the Level 7 Senior Leader | No extra assessment |
The Senior Leader apprenticeship is the other common Level 7 route. CMI notes it can last up to two years and can lead directly to Chartered Manager status, but also that from January 2026 most learners aged 22 and over lose public funding for this Level 7 apprenticeship. That makes the stand-alone CMI Diploma a more common choice for experienced managers paying their own way or with employer support.
Is CMI Level 7 worth it?
It depends on what you want from it.
- It is worth it if you are moving into a senior role and want a structured, practical qualification that fits around work, with recognition and a shorter path to Chartered Manager.
- Consider an MBA instead if you want a full degree, a broad network and a career switch, and you can commit the time and money.
- Consider a professional accountancy route if you work in finance. ACCA's Strategic Business Leader exam covers much of the same ground (strategy, governance, risk, leadership and change) within a chartered accountancy qualification. See my ACCA Strategic Professional guide.
In my experience, the managers who get the most from Level 7 are the ones who pick an assignment topic they genuinely need to solve at work. The qualification then becomes a structured way to do your job better, not an extra burden.
Which books help with CMI Level 7?
Your provider will give you a reading list, but two books cover most of the strategy theory the units expect.
- Exploring Strategy: Text and Cases by Johnson, Whittington, Regnér, Angwin and Scholes (Pearson, 13th edition). The standard UK textbook on strategy, detailed and academic, ideal for referencing in assignments.
- Becoming A Strategic Business Leader by me, Adam Niazi. Disclosure: this is my own book. It is a concise guide to the core strategy, governance and leadership models, originally written for the ACCA SBL exam and useful for any manager. Its chapters on strategic analysis, strategic choice, stakeholders, leadership, risk, project management and managing change line up well with CMI units 701, 704, 705 and 708. You can read three chapters free.
For quick refreshers on individual models, my guides to PESTEL, McKinsey 7S, Kotter's 8 steps and stakeholder theory are written in plain English. For the wider leadership picture, see my pages on strategic leadership and strategic management.
Bottom line
CMI Level 7 Strategic Management and Leadership Practice is a master's-level professional qualification for senior managers, available as an Award (7 credits), Certificate (14), Diploma (37) or Extended Diploma (64). It is assessed by workplace-based assignments, costs a few thousand pounds for a Diploma depending on the provider, and a Certificate or above opens CMI's Fast Track to Chartered Manager. Check which version and units a provider offers before you enrol.
FAQs
Is CMI Level 7 equivalent to a master's degree?
It is at the same level as a master's degree on the UK's Regulated Qualifications Framework, so the academic demand is comparable. It is not a master's degree itself. A CMI Level 7 Diploma involves far fewer learning hours than a typical master's degree, and it is a professional qualification rather than an academic award, so treat it as a complement to a degree, not a substitute.
How long does the CMI Level 7 Diploma take?
The Diploma involves at least 370 hours of total learning time. Most learners study part-time alongside work. ICS Learn, for example, quotes an average completion time of 8 to 12 months with 18 months of support, while Edinburgh College runs its Diploma as 12 fortnightly online workshops. The Award and Certificate are shorter.
What is the difference between the CMI Level 7 Certificate and Diploma?
Both are at Level 7 and use the same units. The Certificate needs at least 14 credits, usually two units, and about 140 hours of learning. The Diploma needs at least 37 credits, usually four or five units, and about 370 hours. Both qualify for CMI's Fast Track route to Chartered Manager with three years' management experience.
Are there exams in CMI Level 7?
No. CMI Level 7 is assessed through written assignments, usually reports that apply each unit's theory to a real organisation. Guideline lengths are 3,000 to 4,500 words per unit depending on its size. The result is Pass or Refer. Some providers add their own grades, but these are separate from the CMI qualification.
Can I become a Chartered Manager with CMI Level 7?
Yes. CMI's Fast Track route is open to people with a CMI Level 7 Certificate, Diploma or Extended Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership gained in the last five years, plus at least three years' management experience. The Fast Track fee is £162 plus VAT and membership, compared with £750 plus VAT for the Full Assessment route.
What is the difference between 7D30 and 7D1V2?
7D30 is the current CMI Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership Practice, operational since July 2019. 7D1V2 is the older legacy Diploma, which CMI is withdrawing: legacy learners must be certificated by 30 November 2026. New learners should register on the current version, which uses unit numbers 701 to 716.
