ACCA Strategic Professional is the final exam level. Today you must pass two Essentials, Strategic Business Leader (SBL) and Strategic Business Reporting (SBR), plus two Options from AFM, APM, ATX and AAA. From September 2027 the redesigned level needs S1, S2 and just one option, and current passes are credited.
Last checked: November 2026, against ACCA's qualification structure, transition and exam dates pages. ACCA is redesigning the qualification from 2027, so recheck the official pages before you book.
What are the ACCA Strategic Professional exams?
Strategic Professional is the final level of the ACCA Qualification. It sits after Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills, and it is where the exams stop testing whether you can do the technical work and start testing whether you can advise, judge and lead. Under the current structure you must pass:
- Two Essentials: Strategic Business Leader (SBL) and Strategic Business Reporting (SBR).
- Two Options chosen from Advanced Financial Management (AFM), Advanced Performance Management (APM), Advanced Taxation (ATX) and Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA).
Alongside the exams, you need the Ethics and Professional Skills module and, to become a member, at least 36 months of relevant work experience with nine performance objectives signed off. ACCA recommends finishing the ethics module before you attempt any Strategic Professional exam, and you must complete Strategic Professional within seven years of passing your first exam at this level.
Essentials vs Options: what is the difference?
| Exam | Type | What it really tests | Recent pass rates (Jun 2026 / Sep 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| SBL Strategic Business Leader | Essential | Acting as an adviser or leader in an integrated case: strategy, governance, risk, technology, finance and change, plus 20 professional skills marks | 51% / 53% |
| SBR Strategic Business Reporting | Essential | Applying and explaining IFRS accounting in complex situations, including ethics and the wider reporting environment | 47% / 50% |
| AFM Advanced Financial Management | Option | Corporate finance: investment appraisal, valuation, mergers, risk management and treasury | 47% / 47% |
| APM Advanced Performance Management | Option | Designing and evaluating performance management systems and measures | 42% / 41% |
| ATX Advanced Taxation | Option | Advanced tax planning and advice, based on a specific country's tax rules | 47% / 53% |
| AAA Advanced Audit and Assurance | Option | Planning, evaluating and reporting on audit and assurance work at a senior level | 39% / 42% |
Pass rates come from ACCA's June 2026 and September 2026 results announcements. They move around from sitting to sitting, so treat them as a rough guide to difficulty rather than a prediction.
The Essentials are compulsory because they reflect what every ACCA member needs: the ability to report properly (SBR) and to think and act strategically (SBL). The Options are where you specialise. They should reflect the work you do, or want to do.
Which ACCA options should I choose for my career?
The best option is usually the one that matches your day job. You will understand the scenarios faster, your employer may support you, and the knowledge pays off at work straight away. Here is how I would match options to common career paths.
| Career path | Best fit options | Why |
|---|---|---|
| External audit (Big Four or practice) | AAA plus AFM or ATX | AAA builds directly on your audit work; ATX suits practice firms with tax clients |
| Tax advisory or practice | ATX plus AAA or AFM | ATX is the core technical paper for tax roles |
| Corporate finance, deals, treasury | AFM plus APM | AFM covers valuation, mergers and financing decisions |
| Management accounting, FP&A, business partnering | APM plus AFM | APM is about the performance systems you design and report on |
| Industry finance leadership (FD or CFO track) | AFM plus APM | Together they cover funding, investment and performance, which is most of a finance director's agenda |
| Public sector or not-for-profit | APM plus AFM or AAA | Performance measurement and accountability are central in these roles |
A note of realism: under the redesigned qualification, ACCA will only require one option. If you have not yet started your options, read the section on the 2027 changes before you book two.
What is the best order to sit the Strategic Professional exams?
ACCA's progression rules let you take the exams within the Strategic Professional level in any order, as long as you have entered all your outstanding earlier exams. So the order is a choice, not a rule. Three approaches are common.
- Essentials first. Sit SBR straight after FR while IFRS is fresh, then SBL, then options. This front-loads the compulsory papers and is the safest route through the 2027 transition.
- Options alongside work, SBL last. Many students leave SBL until the end because it draws on the whole qualification: governance from AA, performance from PM and APM, finance from FM and AFM. By the time you sit it, you have more to draw on.
- SBL early. Some students sit SBL first because it builds the professional skills (analysis, evaluation, communication, scepticism and commercial acumen) that help in every later paper.
In my experience coaching SBL students, the strongest pattern is to pair SBL with nothing heavier than one other paper, and to sit it once you have some workplace experience to draw on. SBL is a case study about how organisations are actually run, and real experience helps you spot what matters in the exhibits.
| Plan | Session 1 | Session 2 | Session 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essentials first | SBR | SBL | Option(s) |
| Specialist first | Option + SBR | Option | SBL |
| Transition-aware (2027) | SBL | SBR | One option |
What changes to Strategic Professional in 2027?
ACCA is moving to a redesigned qualification. According to its transition timeline, June 2027 is the final sitting of the current Applied Skills and Strategic Professional exams, entry for the new Strategic Professional exams opens in May 2027, and the first sitting is in September 2027. The key changes at this level are:
- Essentials renamed: SBR becomes S1 Business and Sustainability Reporting and SBL becomes S2 Strategic Business Leader.
- Options renamed: AAA becomes SAA Audit and Assurance Professional, AFM becomes SCF Corporate Finance Professional, ATX becomes STA Taxation Advisory Professional and APM becomes SPI Performance and Insights Professional.
- A new option: SDS Data Science Professional, which has no equivalent today.
- Only one option required instead of two.
- A new module: the Ethical, Sustainable Leadership module replaces the ethics module at this level. If you complete the current Ethics and Professional Skills module before transition, you get credit for it.
| Current exam | From September 2027 | Credit for a pass? |
|---|---|---|
| SBL | S2 Strategic Business Leader | Yes |
| SBR | S1 Business and Sustainability Reporting | Yes |
| AAA | SAA Audit and Assurance Professional | Yes |
| AFM | SCF Corporate Finance Professional | Yes |
| ATX | STA Taxation Advisory Professional | Yes |
| APM | SPI Performance and Insights Professional | Yes |
| None | SDS Data Science Professional | Not applicable |
S2 keeps the shape of today's SBL. ACCA's S2 syllabus and specimen exam describe a 3 hour 15 minute integrated case study with three compulsory tasks, 80 technical marks, 20 professional skills marks and a pre-seen released two weeks before the exam. That means everything you learn for SBL now stays relevant after the switch.
How should I plan my exams around the 2027 transition?
ACCA's transition guidance for students points in a clear direction:
- Every pass counts. Each current Strategic Professional pass is credited against its new equivalent.
- If you already have one option, prioritise the Essentials. One option is all the new certificate needs, so your next priority is SBL and SBR.
- Finish the ethics module early. ACCA estimates the current module at about 20 hours, against around 70 hours for the new leadership module.
- Use the sessions before June 2027. December 2026, March 2027 and June 2027 are the last three chances to sit the current papers. Dates are on my ACCA exam dates page and prices on my ACCA exam fees page.
ACCA has not said how a second option pass will be treated once only one is required, so if you are deciding whether to sit a second option before transition, check ACCA's Transition Tool in myACCA first.
How hard is Strategic Professional compared with Applied Skills?
The technical content is not always harder, but the exams ask more of you. There are fewer "do this calculation" requirements and more "evaluate", "advise" and "recommend". You must apply knowledge to a scenario, prioritise, and write like a professional. SBL makes this explicit by awarding 20 of its 100 marks for professional skills, each worth four marks. Students who did well at Applied Skills by learning techniques often need to change their approach at this level: practise full scenarios under time pressure, and get feedback on how you write, not only on what you know.
What are the most common mistakes at Strategic Professional?
Having worked through these exams myself and coached SBL students since, I see the same five mistakes again and again.
- Writing everything you know. At this level, marks go to relevant points applied to the scenario. A page of textbook theory about Porter's five forces earns little unless each point is tied to the company in front of you.
- Ignoring the role and the reader. SBL tasks tell you who you are (for example, a consultant or the finance director) and who you are writing to. Answers that ignore the role lose professional skills marks for communication and commercial acumen.
- Not finishing. Time pressure is real. Students who spend too long on the first task often leave easy marks on the last one. Allocate time by marks and stick to it.
- Too little timed practice. Reading and note-making feel productive but do not build exam speed. Aim for several full timed mocks on the ACCA Practice Platform before each exam.
- Treating it as a memory test. The examiners want judgement: weighing options, questioning data, and recommending a course of action. Practise ending every answer with a clear recommendation.
Each of these is fixable, and most are about technique rather than knowledge. My SBL professional skills guide goes into the skills marks in more detail.
How long should I study for each Strategic Professional exam?
ACCA does not publish official study hours for each paper, and tuition providers vary. As a rough planning guide from my own experience, allow around three months of steady study for SBL or SBR alongside a full-time job, and a similar period for each option. If you are planning two papers in one session, start earlier and make sure the second is in an area you already know well. Leave the final three weeks before any exam for question practice under exam conditions, and for SBL, protect the two weeks after the pre-seen is released.
How my book helps with Strategic Professional
Most of my readers buy Becoming A Strategic Business Leader for SBL, the one exam every Strategic Professional student must pass and the one that will continue as S2 after 2027. Its 19 chapters cover strategic planning and analysis, governance, stakeholders, leadership, risk, internal control, information technology, project management, financial decision making and managing change, in plain English with exam context. It is also useful background for APM (performance analysis and strategy) and AAA (governance and internal control). See the SBL syllabus page for the full chapter mapping, or read three chapters free.
Bottom line
Today, Strategic Professional means passing SBL and SBR plus two of AFM, APM, ATX and AAA. From September 2027 it becomes S1 and S2 plus one of five options, with every current pass credited. Choose options that match your career, consider sitting the Essentials early, finish the ethics module before transition, and plan your remaining papers across the December 2026, March 2027 and June 2027 sessions.
FAQs
How many Strategic Professional exams do I need to pass?
Under the current ACCA Qualification you need four: SBL and SBR, which are compulsory, plus two of AFM, APM, ATX and AAA. From September 2027, the redesigned Strategic Professional level needs three: S1 Business and Sustainability Reporting, S2 Strategic Business Leader and one option. Passes you already hold are credited.
Should I take SBL or SBR first?
ACCA lets you choose. Many students sit SBR soon after Financial Reporting while IFRS is fresh, then move to SBL. Others leave SBL until last because it draws on the whole qualification. With the 2027 transition, getting both Essentials done early is a sensible priority, especially if you already have one option.
Which ACCA option is the easiest?
No option is easy, and pass rates move from sitting to sitting. In June and September 2026, AFM was at 47% both times, ATX at 47% and 53%, APM at 42% and 41%, and AAA at 39% and 42%. Choose the option that fits your job, because familiarity with the subject helps more than small pass rate differences.
What happens to SBL in 2027?
SBL continues as S2 Strategic Business Leader from September 2027. ACCA's S2 syllabus and specimen describe the same structure: a 3 hour 15 minute integrated case study, three compulsory tasks, 80 technical and 20 professional skills marks, and a pre-seen released two weeks before the exam. A current SBL pass is credited as S2.
Is there a time limit for Strategic Professional?
Yes. ACCA states that Strategic Professional must be completed within seven years of passing your first Strategic Professional exam, and that rule continues in the redesigned qualification. If you are close to the limit, plan your remaining papers carefully and check your position in myACCA.
Do I need to complete the ethics module before Strategic Professional?
ACCA recommends completing the Ethics and Professional Skills module before you attempt any Strategic Professional exam. It is also worth finishing before the 2027 transition, because completing it gives you credit for the new Ethical, Sustainable Leadership module, which ACCA estimates at around 70 hours compared with about 20 hours today.
