What are ACCA SBL technical articles?
ACCA's SBL technical articles are free articles written by or for the examining team to explain parts of the Strategic Business Leader syllabus in more depth than a study text can. ACCA groups them by syllabus area (A to H), alongside short topic explainer videos. There are around 40 articles in the current library, covering leadership, governance, strategy, risk, technology, control, finance and change management.
They matter for two reasons. First, the examining team writes them, so they show you how the examiners think about a topic. Second, some topics in the SBL syllabus get only light treatment in study texts but come up in exam tasks, and the articles fill those gaps. You do not need to read all of them. You need to read the right ones, at the right time, and turn them into exam-ready points.
Which SBL technical articles should I read first?
If you only have time for ten, read these. I have ranked them by how often the ideas they cover help in exam tasks, based on my experience coaching SBL students and the shape of recent exams.
| Rank | Article | Syllabus area | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | How to approach Strategic Business Leader | Exam technique | Read first. Sets out how the case study works and what the examiners reward, before you learn any content. |
| 2 | Financial analysis in SBL | G Finance | Shows which calculations matter strategically and how to interpret them rather than just compute ratios. |
| 3 | All about stakeholders (parts 1 and 2) | B Governance | Stakeholder analysis appears in almost every SBL case. These two articles give you the vocabulary and the categories. |
| 4 | The strategic planning process (parts 1 and 2) | C Strategy | Applies planning theory to a scenario, which is exactly the skill SBL tests. |
| 5 | Applying big data and data analytics in SBL | E Technology | Technology and data feature heavily in modern cases; this explains the business uses in plain terms. |
| 6 | Cyber security and the strategic business leader | E Technology | Shows how to evaluate IT security as a board-level risk, not a technical topic. |
| 7 | Strategic and operational risks | D Risk | Clarifies the difference between the two and how to assess impact and likelihood. |
| 8 | Culture and configuration | A Leadership | Covers the cultural web and organisational structure together, a frequent pairing in exam tasks. |
| 9 | Ethical decision making | A Ethics | Gives you two frameworks for structuring an ethical recommendation, which earns marks reliably. |
| 10 | Project documentation, roles and responsibilities | H Projects | Business cases and project initiation documents are a common task format. |
Pair these with ACCA's examining team guidance, which comments on how real candidates answered past exams, and the how to use the SBL pre-seen guide.
All SBL technical articles by syllabus area
Here is the full current library, grouped the way ACCA groups it, with a one-line summary of what each article gives you for the exam.
A: Leadership
- Responsible leadership: what it means for leaders to deliver results without harming stakeholders, useful for tasks on tone at the top and leadership style.
- Culture and configuration: how to prepare and evaluate a cultural web, and why organisational structure and configuration matter.
- Ethical decision making: two decision-making frameworks you can use to structure an answer to an ethical dilemma.
Exam use: leadership tasks often ask you to evaluate a leader's behaviour or recommend a cultural change. The cultural web and an ethical framework give your answer a structure the marker recognises.
B: Governance
- Environmental and sustainability issues: balancing returns to shareholders with duties to other stakeholders and the environment.
- All about stakeholders, part 1: what stakeholders are and the different ways of classifying them.
- All about stakeholders, part 2: a closer look at specific stakeholder groups and their claims on the organisation.
- Corporate governance from the inside out: why good governance depends on internal behaviour as well as external regulation.
- Diversifying the board: the benefits and costs of board diversity and the regulatory push behind it.
- Independence as a concept in corporate governance: why independence matters for non-executive directors, auditors and professional behaviour.
- Public sector governance: the main themes of governance in public bodies, which have different objectives from companies.
- The integrated report framework: the principles and content of an integrated report, including the six capitals.
Exam use: governance is one of the most heavily tested areas. Expect tasks on board composition, the role of non-executives, stakeholder claims and reporting. The integrated reporting article is especially useful because candidates often confuse it with sustainability reporting.
C: Strategy
- Growing in partnership: the strategic case for joint ventures, alliances and other partnerships as routes to growth.
- Market segmentation: a strategic analysis and positioning tool: how segmenting customers supports strategic analysis and positioning decisions.
- The strategic planning process, part 1: the complexities of strategic planning and how to apply them to a scenario.
- The strategic planning process, part 2: continues the scenario approach to show planning in practice.
Exam use: ACCA also offers topic explainer videos on the Ansoff matrix, the value chain, PESTEL, SWOT and Porter's five forces in this section. See my model guides on PESTEL, Porter's five forces and the Ansoff matrix for exam-focused summaries.
D: Risk
- Four lines of defence and assurance mapping: how assurance mapping shows who manages each risk and how much assurance controls provide.
- COSO's enterprise risk management: the main elements of the COSO enterprise risk management guidance.
- Strategic and operational risks: how to separate the two types and assess them by impact and probability.
Exam use: risk tasks usually ask you to identify, assess and recommend responses. Read these alongside my guides to enterprise risk management and the COSO framework.
E: Technology and data analytics
- Applications of new technology, part 1: how cloud, mobile and smart technology are being used across business.
- Applications of new technology, part 2: further applications and their impact on organisations.
- Applications of new technology, part 3: completes the series with more examples you can adapt to a scenario.
- Applying big data and data analytics in SBL: what big data is, its characteristics, and which types of analytics help business leaders.
- The impacts of new technologies on organisational culture: how digital tools and homeworking change culture, linking technology to leadership.
- A world of intelligent agents: how AI, machine learning and robotics are used, and the ethical questions they raise.
- Principles and application of e-marketing in SBL: how e-marketing differs from traditional marketing, applied to an exam-style question.
- Cyber security and the strategic business leader: why leaders must be able to assess IT security, with practical application.
- Getting connected to the Internet of Things: what connected devices make possible and the risks they bring.
- E-commerce: business-to-business and business-to-consumer e-commerce, with benefits and social costs.
Exam use: technology is now part of most SBL cases. The examiners want business judgement about technology, not technical detail. Ask: what value does it create, what does it cost, what risks does it bring, and how will people react?
F: Organisational control and audit
- Internal audit: internal audit as "the control of controls" and its place in the governance framework.
- Environmental auditing: why organisations commission environmental audits and how they build stakeholder confidence.
Exam use: control tasks often combine internal audit, internal control weaknesses and management information. Practise recommending specific, practical controls.
G: Finance in planning and decision-making
- Financial analysis in Strategic Business Leader (SBL): how to analyse financial performance and position, focusing on figures that matter strategically.
- Assessing organisation performance: interpreting performance information in the context of the question, rather than just calculating it.
Exam use: SBL does not want pages of ratios. It wants a few relevant calculations, interpreted for the decision at hand. ACCA lists a suitability, acceptability and feasibility video here too; see my SAF guide.
H: Enabling success and change management
- Project documentation, roles, and responsibilities: the business case, the project initiation document and who does what in a project.
- The Baldrige performance excellence model: what the Baldrige model is and how it might be examined.
- Planning for success: successful project management: how projects are planned and managed, illustrated with a past SBL question.
- Blockchain: a revolution in the making: a plain explanation of blockchain and its business implications.
- Cryptocurrencies: what cryptocurrencies are, their disruptive potential and their use as a source of finance.
- Performance indicators: how to set key performance indicators and critical success factors, shared with APM.
Exam use: change management tasks often ask for a plan. Use a recognised model such as Lewin or Kotter to structure it, then apply each step to the case.
How should I use SBL technical articles in my revision?
- Learn the topic first, then read the article. The articles assume some knowledge. Read your study text or my book's chapter on the area, then use the article to deepen it.
- Make a one-page summary. After each article, write five to eight points you could use in an exam answer. If you cannot, you have read it too passively.
- Practise with a question. Find a past question on the same area on the ACCA Practice Platform and answer it. My SBL past papers guide lists where to find them.
- Revisit before the exam. In the final fortnight, after the pre-seen is out, reread the summaries most relevant to the case organisation's industry.
Which articles should I prioritise for the December 2026 exam?
ACCA tells candidates not to question-spot from the pre-seen, and I agree. But the pre-seen does tell you the industry and the organisation. Once it is released, look at the business model and pick the technical articles that will help you understand it. A technology-heavy business points you to section E; a public or not-for-profit body points you to public sector governance; a fast-growing business may make partnerships and project management more relevant. See my December 2026 SBL pre-seen plan for the full approach.
What other free ACCA resources are worth using?
| Resource | What it gives you | When to use it |

| Professional skills in SBL | How the 20 professional skills marks work | Early, then again before mocks |
| Examining team guidance | Comments on how candidates answered real exams | After each past paper you attempt |
| SBL exam technique resources | Guidance on the computer-based exam | Before your first timed mock |
| How to use the SBL pre-seen | Do's and don'ts for the pre-seen | The day the pre-seen is released |
How my book connects to the technical articles
The technical articles go deep on specific topics. Becoming A Strategic Business Leader gives you the broad base they build on: 19 short chapters that cover the full SBL syllabus, from strategic analysis (chapter 2) and stakeholders (chapter 7) through risk (chapter 12), information technology (chapter 15), financial decision making (chapter 18) and managing change (chapter 19). Many students read the relevant chapter first, then the matching ACCA article. The SBL syllabus page shows the chapter for each syllabus area, and you can read three chapters free.
Bottom line
ACCA's SBL technical articles are free, written with the examining team in mind, and cover all eight content areas of the syllabus. Start with the top ten above, especially the approach, financial analysis, stakeholder and strategic planning articles. Learn the topic first, read the article, summarise it in exam-ready points, and test yourself with a past question.
FAQs
Are SBL technical articles examinable?
The articles are not a separate syllabus, but they explain topics that are in the SBL syllabus, and they are written with the examining team's approach in mind. Reading them helps you understand how the examiners view a topic and gives you points you can apply in tasks. The syllabus and study guide remains the definitive list of what can be examined.
How many SBL technical articles are there?
ACCA's SBL technical articles page currently lists around 40 articles, grouped into the eight content areas of the syllabus from Leadership (A) to Enabling success and change management (H). It also includes short topic explainer videos on models such as the cultural web, Ansoff, the value chain, PESTEL and change management.
Which SBL technical article is most important?
Start with How to approach Strategic Business Leader, because it explains what the exam rewards. After that, Financial analysis in SBL is the most practical, since many candidates calculate too much and interpret too little. The stakeholder and strategic planning articles are also high value because those topics appear in most cases.
When should I read the SBL technical articles?
Read each article after you have studied the topic in your main text, not before. Then summarise it in a few exam-ready points and attempt a related past question. In the final fortnight, once the pre-seen is out, reread the summaries most relevant to the case organisation's industry and business model.
Where can I find SBL technical articles?
They are free on accaglobal.com under Study support resources, Strategic Business Leader, Technical articles and topic explainers. Each link on this page goes straight to ACCA's article. You do not need to log in to read them, and they sit alongside other free resources such as examining team guidance and the pre-seen guide.
