Best ACCA SBL books compared

By Adam Niazi FCCA · Last updated 6 November 2026

The best ACCA SBL books are an exam kit from Kaplan or BPP (ACCA's two content partners) for case practice, plus one source of theory: a full study text or course book, or a concise model guide such as Becoming A Strategic Business Leader. Add pocket notes or your own notes for revision.

Becoming A Strategic Business LeaderAdam Niazi FCCA (my own book)The core SBL models, condensed into 19 short chapters

Strategic Business Leader is an integrated case study exam, so the "best book" depends on the job you need it to do. You need one book to practise on (a kit), one source of theory (a full text or a concise guide), and something short to revise from. Below I group the options by those three jobs, then suggest which combination to buy. If you are new to the exam itself, start with my ACCA SBL exam guide.

Which SBL books are ACCA approved?

ACCA names two content partners for the ACCA Qualification: Kaplan Publishing and BPP Learning Media (ACCA). This replaced the older Approved Content Provider scheme from September 2024. ACCA strongly recommends the partners' question banks as your primary resource for question practice (ACCA), which is why both kits sit at the top of my list.

Everything else, including my book, is independent. That does not make it worse or better; it means you should judge it on whether it helps you understand and apply the models.

Best SBL books for practice: the exam kits

Kaplan SBL Exam Kit

Kaplan's kit for the September 2026 to June 2027 sittings contains exam-style questions written by tutors, past papers and mock exams. The online extras on MyKaplan include answer debrief videos, an interactive eBook, a revision planner and step-by-step answer walkthroughs, available for 12 months from purchase. Printed ISBN 978-1-83735-281-4 (Kaplan).

BPP SBL Exam Practice Kit

BPP's current ACCA range is built around a Course Book and an Exam Practice Kit (BPP). The SBL Exam Practice Kit gives you exam-standard questions with answers across the syllabus areas. BPP did not show a UK price on its own site when I checked, so compare retailers for the edition valid to June 2027.

Which kit? Use the one that matches your tuition provider. If you self-study, either works. The key is to attempt full tasks under time pressure, then mark yourself against the guide. My Kaplan vs BPP comparison covers the differences in detail.

Best SBL books for learning the theory

Kaplan SBL Study Text

The full Kaplan text covers every syllabus area and comes with MyKaplan extras: knowledge checks, an interactive eBook through BibliU, digital pocket notes, a study planner and progress tests (Kaplan). Printed ISBN 978-1-83735-255-5. It is thorough, which is its strength and its challenge: many SBL students do not finish it.

BPP SBL Course Book

BPP's equivalent full-syllabus book. Older editions were called Workbooks, so check the cover for the sitting dates. Like the Kaplan text, it is complete and long.

Becoming A Strategic Business Leader (my book)

I wrote this as the concise theory companion I kept wishing my SBL students had. It covers the models and topics that come up again and again, in 19 short chapters, so you can read a chapter in an evening and then apply it to a kit question the next day.

Becoming A Strategic Business Leader: The Ultimate All-In-One Guide by Adam Niazi FCCA, book cover

1. Becoming A Strategic Business Leader: The Ultimate All-In-One Guide

Adam Niazi FCCA, 2023

Best for: SBL students who want the core models condensed before kit practice

Disclosure: this is my own book. A concise guide to the ACCA Strategic Business Leader syllabus in 19 chapters, from strategic planning, analysis and choice through governance, stakeholders, leadership, boards, reporting, internal controls, risk, ethics, organisational structure, IT, online marketing, project management, financial decision making and managing change. Each chapter explains the core models in plain English so you can apply them to the case study quickly. It is an independent guide, not a content partner text, and works best alongside a Kaplan or BPP exam kit.

Key lesson: Choose the model that fits the case requirement, then apply it to the scenario rather than describing it.

Read the first three chapters free (Strategic Planning, Strategic Analysis and Performance Analysis) before deciding. The SBL topics by chapter page maps each syllabus area to a chapter.

Best SBL books for revision

Kaplan SBL Pocket Notes are a condensed summary for the September 2026 to June 2027 sittings, sold in print and as an eBook (Kaplan). They are handy for a last recap but too brief to learn from.

My book also works as revision material, because each chapter is already condensed. Many students prefer to make their own summaries; my guide to ACCA SBL notes shows how.

What makes a good SBL book?

SBL is unlike the exams before it. There are no long lists of rules to memorise and no complex calculations to drill. Instead, you get a large case study, three tasks, and roles that may change between tasks, according to ACCA's published syllabus. Marks come from picking the right model for the requirement, applying it to the organisation in front of you, and presenting it in the format asked for, such as a report, briefing notes or slides. A good SBL book therefore does three things:

  • Explains models briefly and clearly, with the key point you would actually use in an answer.
  • Shows application, not just definition. "PESTEL has six factors" earns nothing; "rising interest rates make this expansion harder to fund" does.
  • Gets you to practice quickly. The longer you spend reading, the less time you spend on the kit.

Judge every book on this list, including mine, against those three tests.

How should you use your SBL books, week by week?

StageWeeks before examMain bookWhat to do
Foundations12 to 9Study text or concise guideLearn one syllabus area at a time; try a short kit question after each
Application9 to 5Exam kitFull tasks under time pressure; mark against the guide; note why marks were lost
Pre-seen2 to 0Pre-seen + your notesAnalyse the organisation and industry; link likely models to it
Final mocks4 to 1Kit mocks, Practice PlatformAt least one full mock in the exam software
RecapFinal daysPocket notes, own notes, concise guideShort daily reviews of models and professional skills

The pre-seen material is released two weeks before the exam, so plan your reading to finish well before then. That leaves the final fortnight for the pre-seen and mock exams rather than new theory.

SBL book comparison: price, format and best use

Kaplan prices below are from Kaplan Publishing's UK site, checked 6 November 2026. I have not listed BPP prices because I could not verify them on BPP's own site.

Which combination of SBL books should you buy?

Your situationBuyAdd for free
Attending a tuition courseThe kit your course usesCourse notes, ACCA examiner's reports
Self-study, plenty of timeStudy text or course book + kitACCA Study Hub, technical articles
Self-study, short on timeKit + a concise model guideExaminer's reports, past papers
Resitting SBLA current kit (new questions), plus a concise guide to fill theory gapsExaminer's report for your failed sitting
Tight budgetOne kitACCA Study Hub for theory, free model guides on this site

In my experience, the self-study student short on time is the most common SBL candidate: working full time, having already passed SBR or an option, and needing to refresh strategy and governance theory fast. A full text often goes unfinished in that situation. A kit plus a short guide gets you to question practice sooner, and that is where SBL is won.

What free resources should you use alongside your books?

Will SBL books change in 2027?

Yes. ACCA's official timeline shows June 2027 as the final sitting of the current Strategic Professional exams, with the new exams first sat in September 2027. SBL continues as S2 Strategic Business Leader, still a three hours 15 minutes integrated case study with 80 technical and 20 professional skills marks. Buy current editions only if you sit by June 2027; otherwise wait for the new ones. The core models carry over, so a guide to them stays useful.

What mistakes do students make with SBL books?

  • Reading the whole text before touching the kit. By the time they start practising, there are only a few weeks left.
  • Buying an old kit. The theory changes slowly, but the kit's value is in recent exam questions and current marking guides.
  • Treating the exam as a memory test. Reciting a model scores little. Applying it to the case is what earns marks.
  • Ignoring professional skills. Twenty marks depend on how you communicate, analyse, evaluate and show commercial acumen and scepticism, not just on what you know.

How I chose these

I included the two content partners' SBL ranges because ACCA recommends their question banks for practice, and I checked formats, contents and prices on the publishers' own sites in November 2026. I included my own book because it was written specifically for SBL, and I have disclosed that it is mine. I did not include unofficial PDF notes or books I could not verify as current.

Bottom line

The best ACCA SBL setup is one exam kit from Kaplan or BPP, one source of theory, and something short for revision. If you have time, a full study text works; if you are short on time, a concise guide gets you practising sooner. Try my book's free chapters to see if it suits you, then put most of your hours into the kit.

FAQs

What is the best book for ACCA SBL?

There is no single best book because SBL needs practice and theory. For practice, use an exam kit from Kaplan or BPP, ACCA's two content partners. For theory, use a full study text or course book if you have time, or a concise model guide if you need to get to question practice faster.

Is the Kaplan or BPP SBL kit better?

Both are written by ACCA content partners and ACCA recommends both publishers' question banks for practice. Choose the one your tuition provider uses. If you self-study, Kaplan's kit includes MyKaplan online extras such as debrief videos and answer walkthroughs, which some students value; otherwise compare sample pages and pick the clearer style.

Do I need the SBL study text?

Not always. SBL assumes much knowledge from earlier exams and rewards applying a few models well. Students with time often use a full text. Students who are short on time often do better with a kit plus a concise model guide, because it gets them practising case study tasks sooner.

How much do SBL books cost?

On 6 November 2026, Kaplan's UK site listed the SBL Study Text at £48.00 printed or £42.00 as an eBook, the Exam Kit at £30.00 printed or £25.00 as an eBook, Pocket Notes at £14.00 and the Essentials Pack at £92.00, plus delivery on printed books. BPP prices vary by retailer.

Is Becoming A Strategic Business Leader an ACCA approved book?

No. It is an independent guide written by me, Adam Niazi FCCA, and is not part of ACCA's content partner programme. It condenses the core SBL models and topics into 19 chapters and is designed to be used alongside a Kaplan or BPP exam kit, not instead of one. The first three chapters are free.

Should I buy SBL books now if I sit after June 2027?

Probably not. ACCA's timeline shows June 2027 as the final sitting of the current Strategic Professional exams, with new exams from September 2027, when SBL becomes S2 Strategic Business Leader. Wait for editions written for the new syllabus. Core models carry over, so model guides remain useful.
